17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.
Sometimes it seems like we are always on the defensive in our spiritual war. I don’t know how many times I have heard this passage quoted to say that we (the church) won’t be overcome by Satan. But this passage says something quite different. Gates are a defensive mechanism. No gate ever went out and waged a battle. When we trust in God, we are or should be anyway, on the offensive. In our spiritual armor, we don’t have anything made for retreat. We are to run to the battle and be confident that God will win the battle for us. Not even the gate of Hell can withstand the onslaught of God’s Kingdom and His people marching onward.
